Part of Measuring one customer data journey without pretending correlation is cause
Customer data platforms key metrics: defining one objection metric
Customer data platforms key metrics for one England journey: a renewal objection metric defined field by field, edge cases counted, threshold left blank.
Terms for one objection metric
Use these labels to separate a decision about contact from evidence that an objection moved through systems. They describe the card, not a measured result; the supporters club example below supplies one use case.
Decision : The question the card is intended to inform.
Event : The schema-versioned record objection_record_confirmed.
Eligible objection : An authenticated request or credible internal finding accepted during the period.
Denominator : All eligible objections accepted in the period.
Numerator : Denominator cases confirmed at every in-scope destination.
Destination : A system included in the propagation check.
Lineage : The source, query, model version and deduplication rule.
Threshold : A buyer-approved value with its approver, approval date and evidence ID recorded.
Build the measure around its decision
The example is an England supporters club renewing annual memberships. The card answers one question only: may a member who has objected receive a renewal message? Do not make this result stand in for joins, delivery rows or credited renewals; those measures need independent cards, queries and owners.
Record objection_record_confirmed and its schema version. Set the population to England members whose objections were accepted in the period. Define the fraction as eligible objections confirmed at every in-scope destination divided by all eligible objections accepted during that same period. This puts the numerator over the denominator.
Use a rolling 30-day window in Europe/London, with the data protection lead responsible and the CRM manager as deputy. Put the source, query, model version and deduplication rule in lineage. Without those fields, the figure cannot be reproduced as evidence for pausing or releasing an audience.
Fix the authorised source and schema before counting, in line with cleaning data before implementation. The event label and version should remain consistent between records and the calculation; otherwise, the card could combine unlike events and make its stated fraction difficult to reproduce.
Carry each evidence ID from the card into relevant cost lines through the blank budget template. This preserves the reference associated with the measure; it does not turn a destination row count into revenue or make that row count evidence of permission to contact a member.
Decide which objections qualify
Eligibility depends on evidence and timing, not on whether an objection has reached the end of its route. Include authenticated requests or credible internal findings accepted during the period. Keep every eligible item in the denominator until all in-scope destinations confirm; cases lacking both forms of support stay outside.
| Case | Denominator | Numerator | Card status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Confirmed at every in-scope destination | Yes | Yes | Complete |
| Confirmed at some destinations only | Yes | No | Partly propagated |
| Paused before completion | Yes | No | Paused |
| No authentication and no credible internal finding | No | No | Outside the card |
Read incomplete states without hiding them
A partly propagated case stays visible because a destination without confirmation may still hold the member in an audience. The card exists to expose that incomplete state, not conceal it. The ICO's accuracy principle requires reasonable steps to ensure inaccurate personal data are erased or rectified without delay.
If a figure is corrected later, label the new value as a restatement. Keep the original and revised status visible together, allowing the reader to see what changed and why. That record matters when the figure is used to decide whether an audience should remain paused or can be released.
Keep a recorded flag separate from permission
A suppression flag describes a recorded system state, not a legal position. UK GDPR Article 21 gives individuals the right to object to direct marketing.
The ICO's right to object guidance says that individuals have an absolute right to stop their data being used for direct marketing. Classify the actual use and channel before sending renewal content.
Before relying on the flag, run a consent trail audit to test what the platform records. The metric checks whether the recorded objection reached every destination; the audit checks whether the underlying record can be trusted. These are related checks, but they answer different questions.
This measure does not replace review of data minimisation, purpose limitation, storage limitation, integrity and confidentiality, or lawfulness, fairness and transparency. A data protection impact assessment and electronic mail marketing rules also sit outside this metric and need their own context.
Approve the threshold before setting a response
Leave the threshold blank until the buyer approves a value against its own decision and risk. Record the approver's role, approval date and evidence ID so the value can be traced to its source. No industry number is supplied: a general benchmark would not fit every buyer's decision.
Write the response before producing the first figure: pause the renewal audience and rerun the propagation check. The named owner decides when the audience may be released again. A reporting dashboard can display evidence health and corrections alongside the figure, without replacing the card's definitions.
Reuse the terms without combining measures
Apply the same vocabulary to joins, delivery rows and credited renewals, but give each group its own card. Keep each event, population and fraction distinct. The wider approach to measurement and reporting can sit alongside these separate records without merging their results.
Never raise an accepted-match proportion by forcing ambiguous identities together. The measurement mistakes discussion sets out that risk. Keep credited renewals separate too; an objection-propagation fraction is not, by itself, a causal revenue result. Use attribution methods for that distinction.
